As you may know,
HASTAC III .is right around the corner!! This year's theme is
Transversing Boundaries. I'm excited to learn more about the conversations that will evolve around this topic!!
I've been thinking of the whole idea of transversing boundaries and what it means to K-12. Yes, I could talk about the usual pedagogical K-12 goobley-gook, but what I'm really interested in is the future of education. In short, I believe education is about to launch and to travel, travel, travel...transversing boundaries unimaginable before. (Especially, considering Moore's Law.)
But until then, many teachers will continue to upset the whole applecart. Yes, I am an applecart upsetter. Goodness knows, I've been called down to the prinicpal's office more as a teacher than I ever did as a student. I must admit, as I sit in meetings with my superiors, I daydream of my online teacher-friends. I wonder if they are in the principal's office too. Needless to say, they inspire me. They push my thinking. They help me to see that it is okay to upset the whole apple cart every now and then. Hence, I am ever thankful for them...for YOU!
A lot of folks don't know how isolated K-12 teachers feel. Thankfully, electronic particles allow teachers to become travelers and tourist with each and every click a quest.
Moreover, when I think of the topic of Traversing Boundaries, it reminds me of the short video of the
Meeting of the Minds: Mailer & McLuhan Talk . I really think they both make so many interesting points, especially about travel and alienation. So check it out!! I'd love to hear your thoughts. Please chime in!
Also, please, please consider:
The third annual HASTAC conference will be held April 19-21, 2009, at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign under the theme "Traversing Digital Boundaries."
As the theme suggests, the gathering will focus on the exploration of new territory and in work that crosses, manipulates, or simply ignores traditional boundaries. The conference program will include presentations of research, performances, technology demonstrations, posters, panel discussions, and "virtual" participation via telepresence technology.
To participate, please submit a one-page abstract describing your work, how it traverses digital boundaries, and how you would like to present it at the conference (panel, poster, demo, dance, etc.). Submissions are due December 17, 2008 to HASTAC3@ncsa.uiuc.edu.
Submissions will be reviewed by the planning committee and invitations to participate will be issued by January 21, 2009.
In addition to the conference program, we also will spotlight innovative submitted work on the conference website through video, blogs, and other online features.
