About Me:
I'm the founder and exec. dir. of a fledgling nonpartisan, nonprofit consortium dealing with media & marketing's impact on kids.

We’re igniting a firestorm from inside our industry, fueled by parents and peers ready to fight fire with fire. Web. Viral. Buzz. Text. Cell. Podcasts. Internet films. Blogs. Ezines. Gaming.

We’re teaming with powerhouse thinkers and technologists to flip harmful messages into positive ones, using the power of media and marketing turned on itself.

Subversive? Probably. Effective. You betcha!

Our counter-marketing uses the same techniques targeting kids to spin the messages in a favorable direction. We shift the momentum to a healthier track and dial down the damage that’s already out there.

We're using film, web, hands-on education, & m-power media programs to lift the veil on tactics used for pop culture persuasion, with the help of industry insiders.

By promoting mindful media consumption, & using fun formats like our reality-show media deconstruction, we're creating awareness and critical thinking skills that serve to pop the bubble on motivations and refresh kids' self-worth building a healthier worldview for children...

Corollary #2: It's absolutely frightening how easily we (myself included) can be swayed by an eloquently written argument about issues where we are not experts and/or are not familiar with how it fits into the bigger picture.

An aside: I've become increasingly uncomfortable over the last several years with folks who are too "certain" about their positions on pretty much whatever educational and/or global issue you might name.

Corollary: "I'm only intolerant of intolerance." :-)

The idea of open data sharing and sharing more failures is an interesting one. Those on opposite sides of the fence start from completely different fundamental assumptions about what scholarship is and how to maintain high quality.

The usual "social construction of reality" arguments apply here. A surface analysis (outsider view) of other peoples motivations, goals, and ideas can be really misleading because it is colored by our own assumptions.

This is an interesting article from the Chronicle of Higher Ed on a related topic -- the best system for peer review.

I know people on all sides of these issues (including insiders and outsiders), and I frankly haven't figured out what I believe is "right." Depends on those fundamental assumptions again. :-)

IA few years ago I was a guest speaker for a high school health education class, and the teacher had some good resources about the media and body image. He had a few slides that showed how the fashion magazines do a lot of "photo-shopping" to depict the models in ways that are not humanly possible. He also had a lot of information about stress management, too, that somehow fit in with his unit.

I think I stashed some of the references in a "high-school guidance/health misc" folder- if I can remember the source, or come across the file, I'll let you know. I'm pretty sure that the researchers continued to do additional work in the field.

I also have some materials from a college psychology course I taught a couple of years ago...Although we discussed eating disorders, I also reviewed the impact of the media- the social-cultural impact on behaviors related to health and self-image. I'm in the process of reorganizing all of my "stuff", so if I find something useful, I'll let you know!

Yeah, but this is less about 'eating disorders' more about porn/objectification/ads/online game derivs ..there's plenty of eating disorder linkage to appearance based cues...

The UCLA School Mental Health project website has been around for years and has tons of resources and links. I think if you do a search on the site about eating disorders, you might find some information related to media and body image. http://smhp.psych.ucla.edu/

Liz,

Interesting ideas! I especially like this part:

"we're creating awareness and critical thinking skills that serve to pop the bubble on motivations and refresh kids' self-worth building a healthier worldview for children.."

This statement should be placed above the doorways of all schoolhouses!

you might consider a new virtual world analytics solution being used by Linden Lab called V-Tracker. If you really want to know whether your virtual efforts are successful, V-Tracker gives the best data.
